A diary, a King, and a young girl's heart. Love Beads from Elvis The Diary of Kathy Tatum I wasn’t looking for it, but I found it just the same. The red leather covering is well worn, and the locking clasp that once kept my secrets safe from the world is missing. There is duct tape on the binding, and the page edges have yellowed over time, but it is, after all, almost fifty years old. A well-worn Polaroid photo slips out... I remember vividly the night it was taken, oh, to be held in his strong arms. He was beautiful then—his skin tanned to a golden brown, his jet black hair neatly combed straight back, how it felt when he gently kissed the back of my neck and sang softly into my ear...

I've read dozens of books on Elvis and consider myself well versed on the man and his life. This is the first book that I actually questioned it's authenticity. Small things didn't seem right. The picture looks like a younger Elvis, not the Elvis that has already entered the last 1/4 of his life. Although it's a known fact that Elvis liked young women, it was uncomfortable to me to read about their make-out sessions (some of which were in public) considering she was barely 16 and he was a married man. His pursuit of her, at his age, read creepy, like a pedophile, which I don't think he was. Their dialogue was teenage sounding, like they were both in high school. I expected Chris Hansen from "To Catch a Predator" to show up any moment. All this said, I did some very thorough research on the author, and on her co-author, and everything checks out as legit. My guess is that she was a relatively sheltered, naive girl, writing about an overwhelming experience. I also feel that the author doesn't know as much about Elvis as other authors because her experience was so encapsulated. And she was a kid. She didn't even know he was famous outside of Memphis until she saw him perform on TV. I don't think she would have ever written this book, but she agreed to be interviewed at one point, and they butchered it, and tried to spin it into something it wasn't. I think at that point she was motivated to share the real experience. This book is Elvis-lite, but assuming it is true, it's always nice to get a new look inside the bubble.

. I can see that the author wants the world to know of her time with Elvis but if it were me I would hold those precious private moments with Elvis to myself. Because Elvis was still married at the time I personally would not want the world to know the details of our relationship. The book was interesting but to think that my children and grandchildren would now know every detail of our affair turns me off. I would be ashamed to admit that I was having an affair with a married man. The parts of the book that I find hard to believe were of all the kissing they did right in the driveway of Graceland with other people around. He was a married man for goodness sake and everyone knows how he kept his affairs at that time private so Priscilla would not find out. Elvis probably had more women in his life than any hundred men put together. I know a teenager can be naive but to carry on for over two years and not realize that she was nothing more than being "handy' at the time. If she did not realize it then I certainly would hope she realizes it now. I have to agree with other reviewers that it does not look like Elvis in the late 60's and early 70's in that picture. I have read over 30 books about Elvis and I am going to compare the dates in question with the other books that I have. I guess I am just a little skeptical about some of the events described.
Wow that was so very interesting! How exciting and what memories she will forever have. And so fortunate to have put it on paper and to save the few pictures of them together! Loved her story!
Boring and hard to read.
Really? This was a stretch from someone trying to ride on the Elvis fame train.
Every girls dream that loved Elvis and Kathy lived it💗 I don't doubt Elvis had multiple love affairs. What can we say, he was Elvis and so many of us would have loved to spend 5 minutes with him. I recommend this book. 5 stars for the sweet story Kathy shared. Nothing to dislike. It was her story and she told it in her own words. Loved it! Read the book on , now I'm going to buy the book.
Such a sweet love story. I was captivated from start to finish. Thank you for sharing your diary with us all, Kathy!
Just finished Reading! What a Great Read!! A little steamy at times but done very Respectfully! Kathy Writes in a Way that does not Tarnish or Disrespect's Elvis Memory, plus Love her day to day entries of a Young Girl growing up in Memphis! Highly Recommend to Elvis Fans who want to read yet another Great Story of someone who knew and spent time with Elvis.
